As anyone driving south on Sussex Street may have noticed, there are some new holes in the big brick wall on the north side of the Richards Building.
One of the first things we did was to have the Richards Building reviewed by a structural engineer - we wanted to make sure it was ready to stand proud for another ~140 years! Amongst other things, that review uncovered a multi-story crack in the north brick wall. It wasn't caused by a structural problem, thankfully, but it did need to be repaired.
Looking at what was required to repair the crack, we realized that it would be a perfect time to add some windows to the second and third floor. This would not only provide use with some natural light, but also gives us a great view looking north.
We've been working on these openings already from a few weeks, but today was the day we busted through the final exterior course of bricks. We'll spend about a week working with a lift from the outside to finish up these openings, and while we are at it we will clean up and repoint the brick on the back of the building. New windows should be installed by the end of September.
NOTE: WHILE WE ARE USING THE LIFT, THE SUSSEX ST. SIDEWALK ADJACENT TO OUR BUILDING WILL BE CLOSED. WE APOLOGIZE FOR ANY INCONVENIENCE.
Other work currently underway or (hopefully) starting soon:
We are installing new code-compliant ventilation systems on the second floor.
We'll be installing a new stair tower that will exit onto Blackwell, so that we can remove the existing fire escape.
We'll be starting extensive work on the facade - upgrading the existing finishes and reworking the storefront at the ground level.
We are excited for everyone to see our plans for the Richards Building come to fruition!
